Some inmates serve more than time.

We knew it was a quirky and out of the way place - which serves great meals if you should chance to drop in - so we were not really taken too much aback when we came across this article on the infamous wines of Pinheiro da Cruz prison, which we ride past on our Blue Coast tour!

 

The prison's wine-making dates back to the 1950's, but of late they seem to be making a name for themselves.  This summer, our distinguished guests on the Tour de Farce had a chance to eat at the canteen and sample some of the powerful wine the inmates serve.

 

The wine itself certainly makes our Top Ten under 10 wine list, mainly for is uniqueness!
