Following Washington Irving
6/10/2009
When speaking of Granada, Irving found it the "most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes that I have ever seen".
His tales of the Alhambra make poetic and lyrical if not entirely accure historic reading. Irving was fortunate enough to enjoy a sejour in the crumbling Moorish Palace at a time when its royal inhabitants had been displaced by Gypsies, beggars and wayward goats.
These days we are fortunate enough to enjoy the retored Palace after taking much of his original route along the plains and gorges of Andalucia. Having read his account of the journey, I am quite glad that we can enjoy the crimson fields of Poppies without the need of a side-arm to fend off lurking bandoleros!
