Our Azores Bike Tour of São Miguel island is a multi sport adventure taking you back to the land of the ancient mariners.
We'll spend 6 nights hopping these Atlantic islands of staggering beauty once claimed to be the peaks of Atlantis. Bicycle, foot and kayak are the modes of transport to make the most of the sea, hikes and beautiful cycling on offer.

Located between Lisbon and New York, the Azores Islands stand out as exotic flower gardens and Japanese cedars, hot springs and lakes within volcano craters. Our route on the island of São Miguel, embraces cliffs along the coast as well as protected forest hills, providing challenging and very rewarding cycling! You will explore a lush valley filled with fumaroles and natural mineral springs, tranquil beaches and picturesque fishing villages along the coast.
For centuries, sailors crossed half of the Atlantic to reach the Azores Islands, bringing wine, oranges and whale products to mainland Europe. They were an important center of trade between Europe, the Americas and India creating a rich cultural heritage. These islands unfold a complex combination of Portuguese traditions mixed with Flemish and French influences all visible throughout our trip.

Itinerary

DAY 1 - Ponta Delgada

After arrival at Ponta Delgada airport, we'll transfer you to your charming hotel located in the heart of the city. Spend the afternoon exploring local markets, visiting a pineapple plantation, or simply basking in the city's rich history, which evolved from a humble fishing village to the main port of São Miguel Island. The city's historic center, dotted with centuries-old convents, churches, and manor houses, today thrives as a cosmopolitan hub boasting a dynamic economic and cultural life. You'll have a chance to mingle with the group over dinner, capping off the day in this captivating setting.

DAY 2 - Ponta Delgada to Furnas

Embark on a scenic coastal bike tour leading to an exhilarating climb to Pizões pass, followed by a descent into Furnas, a quaint village situated in a dormant volcanic crater on the southeast of San Miguel Island. Over a two-night stay, immerse yourself in its rich geothermal scenery, marked by boiling fumaroles, thermal spa pools, and natural mineral springs.

DAY 3 - Furnas Hike

The group will be shuttled towards Faial da Terra, stopping en route at the stunning Pico dos Bodes coastal viewpoint. In Faial da Terra, we'll undertake the Sanguinho Hike, a roughly 5-kilometer trail, showcasing the island's most famous waterfalls including the striking Salto do Prego. This two-hour journey navigates through dense forests, alongside the Ribeira do Faial da Terra stream, across open fields, and into the charming village of Sanguinho, with the return offering a fresh vista of the picturesque landscape. Post-hike, we'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant in either Faial or Povoação. Those keen for more exploration can opt for an additional 6km coastal hike to Ribeira Quente in the afternoon.

DAY 4 - Furnas to Ribeira Grande

Journey to the North Coast, taking in views of fishing villages, beaches, windmills, and the orange trees that were once the island's main export before a 19th-century plague led to an agricultural shift towards dairy farming and the cultivation of pineapples, passion fruit, tobacco, and tea. You'll visit Europe's sole tea plantation, famed for its organic produce. Weather permitting, the Miradouro do Pico do Ferro will afford a memorable view of the Furnas lake. The route also includes a tour of the Gorreana Tea Factory, a family-operated establishment dating back to 1883, where you can enjoy a café with superb views out to the Atlantic, and a great gift shop.

DAY 5 - Ribeira Grande Hike

Situated atop Ribeira Grande, the circular trail commences and concludes at Caldeiras, a significant geyser field linked to the volcanic activity of Vulcão do Fogo. The journey begins at Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande, home to the island's oldest thermal baths, where geothermal vapor heats spring water used in bath therapies known as "Crown Baths". A short distance ahead, you'll discover caves where cozidos (geothermal stews) are cooked using vapor circulating underground. The trail unfolds stunning vistas of mountains and lush valleys, culminating at the "Salto do Cabrito" waterfall, a mesmerizing cascade plunging into a clear pool. Prepare for some moderate inclines and uneven terrain on this 3-4 hour adventure, and be sure to wear sturdy footwear.

DAY 6 - Ribeira Grande to Ponta Delgada

This coastal route, adorned with hydrangeas and ocean vistas, mostly comprises flat terrain, with a notable climb towards the renowned Miradouro da Vista do Rei offering stunning views. Exercise caution during the descent towards Ponta Delgada due to patchy and slightly uneven roads. The entire ride offers captivating insights into local life through scattered hamlets. An additional highlight is the Sete Cidades Lagoon, one of Portugal's seven natural wonders, boasting a diverse volcanic landscape that includes lava domes and a breathtaking view!

DAY 7 - Ponta Delgada Coastal Hike

Following a visit to Ponta Delgada's vibrant market, a brief taxi ride takes you to the start of a footpath leading to Rocha da Relva. This hidden gem hosts traditionally-built summer houses and the occasional donkey used for transportation. As you hike, expect to see wine cellars and houses nestled among vineyards traditionally bordered with basalt rock. These structures, providing protection from sea spray and a milder environment, impart a unique flavor to the crops. This safe cliffside hike, a perfect extension of your prior biking adventure, offers an intimate experience of Ponta Delgada's scenic charm.
